Make the Most of Mother's Day During Lockdown

As a family-operated small Bahamian business, family has always been extremely important to us - and now more than ever. With that in mind, we are committed to ensuring that our Bahamia Rental Mama still celebrates a sensational Mother’s Day, despite the circumstances we face this weekend. We’ve put together a list of tips so that you too can treat the mothers in your life to a day they deserve.

1. Gifting Flowers - What You Need to Know

What mother doesn’t love a good bouquet of fresh flowers to help commemorate her special day? That said, the shifting developments in the Bahamian retail sector may have left you scratching your head as to whether or not you can buy them for Mother's Day this year. In short, YES, you can.

This week The Bahamas entered Phase 1B of the economic reopening of the country - while plant nurseries have been open for some time now, flowers stores are now able to operate for curbside retail and delivery. That said, the lockdown will of course be in full effect this Sunday. If you intend to arrange a flower delivery for your favourite Bahama Mama, do so for this Friday, May 8th, at the latest

2. Write Your Mother a Handwritten Letter

In this day and age of incredible technological communication, we can beam our voice and face in high definition across the world (more on that later…), BUT, some of the mothers in your life likely remember - and still appreciate - a time when handwritten letters were commonplace.

This year has been tough, so write your mother in your best cursive, telling her how much you appreciate her and all that she’s done to help prepare you for these challenging times. Trust us, this is a surefire way to score major brownie points (to really knock it out of the park, consider making the card yourself!). Don’t forget, due to this weekend’s lockdown requirements, you’ll have to deliver the letter to your mother sometime this week!

3. Give the Gift of Giving

This year a good chunk of the usual Mother's Day gift ideas simply aren’t an option - it will likely still be some time before we can gift hair cuts and manicures to the most important ladies in our lives. So, if you’re stumped for ideas, consider donating to a Bahamian charity in your mothers’ names. With our northern islands still recovering from Hurricane Dorian and of course the rising level of pandemic-induced unemployment, there are plenty of Bahamians in need of support. There are many organizations to choose from - this list of the Government of The Bahamas’s recommended donation recipients is always a good place to start.

4. Kid’s Crafts

If you gat chirren - put dem to work! No seriously, if you share a roof with anybody under the age of 15, appoint them Chief Mother's Day Craft Maker. Your kids will likely relish the distraction from homeschooling and enjoy the opportunity to stretch their creative muscles. Dozens of creative craft ideas are a google search away, and most require little more than normal household items. Plus, while you oversee this operation, you’ll free up some downtime for Mom in advance of her family-filled Sunday.

5. Freshen Up Your Mother’s Day Video Conference

These days, video conferencing has become a normal part of our professional and personal lives. Chances are, you have already had more than a few video calls with most important moms in your digital address book, and already plan on reaching out to them this Mother’s Day. Here are some fun ideas to keep your Mother’s Day video conferences fresh and feeling less like a chore:

  • Make a slideshow of your favorite photos with the mom in question, and share your screen so that everyone can reminisce together

  • Host a game of Mother's Day Trivia - spend some time crafting up questions, and pit siblings against siblings to see who knows Mom best!

  • Record the call - Some video conference apps like Zoom have recording features built right in. Use them, or other screen recording or screenshot tools to save a snapshot of the video conference to your computer. Post it social media later for a laugh, or simply save it to your digital photo albums to look back on when we’re all back together again next Mother’s Day.
