How to Plan Your Social Calendar for the Year

And there it goes - the holiday season is over and we all have “2020 vision” for the New Year! How are those New Year’s Resolutions going? Are any of them to “be more organized”, or “spend more quality time with family and friends”? If so, we can help you check these two off your list in one swoop - this is your chance to get ahead of the game and map out your social calendar for the year with these quick tips:

#1 Go Digital

If you aren’t doing it already, its time to use calendar software. You probably use it for your work schedules, and no doubt all of us carry smartphones in our pocket. If you only take away one thing from this list, it’s this: add your social events to your calendar!

One of the first things you’ll need to add to your social calendar is important birthdays of your friends and family, and for this, there is still no better ‘life hack’ than Facebook. Over the years, birthday reminders have got buried amongst other content like ads and ‘news,’ but here’s a quick 2-step way to slice through the noise.

  1. Click ‘Events’ in the Facebook sidebar, and then click ‘See All’ at the bottom of the ‘Upcoming Birthdays’ column on the right - this will lay out the birthdays of your entire friends list chronologically for your reference.

  2. From here, add the birthday dates of those special people that you already know you will be celebrating, and while you’re at it, schedule gift-buying reminders for a week or two before!

#2 Take Advantage of What’s Local

Make sure you’re on top of the events schedule where you live! This of course is easier said than done, and you can apply this advice in a variety of ways. Do you have a favorite venue? Or is there a new restaurant or bar you’ve been meaning to try? Or even just somewhere close to where you live, good for a spontaneous outing? Make sure you follow these venues on social media to keep track of their specials and events.

Also, stay on top of the festival scene! From The Bahamas Rum Festival, to The Bahamas International Film Festival, the Wine and Food Festival, Greek Festival, and of course all of our many Regattas… the list goes on! Adding your favorites to your digital social calendar early in the year will go a long way in helping you actually make it there on the day.

#3 Don’t Forget the Tourist Factor

You probably have the Bahamas’ long weekends memorized, but how familiar are you their US counterparts? We don’t celebrate President’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, or July 4th, but knowing these American holidays is useful for judging when your favourite spots in Atlantis or Baha Mar will be bumping!

Similarly, you can check how many cruise ships are docked in the harbour - there are many places online that provide this information, like this one. With each boat holding thousands of passengers, this handy trick can give you an idea of how busy your favorite downtown hangout will be.

With these 5 ships in port, downtown Nassau is temporarily home to an additional 10,000+ visitors.

#4 What’s the Weather?

As an island nation, many of us are all too keenly aware of how necessary a favorable forecast is for a successful event. While you should put very little faith in any weather forecast made more than 10 days in advance, historical averages can be useful even months out when trying to control for all the weather variables. For example, did you know that January is the driest month of the year, or that Nassau records rain on average 138 days a year? That’s more than 1 in 3!
